Olympic Advisors SL was founded in 1989 as a Destination Service Provider company but with its view set on the 1992 Summer Olympic Games of Barcelona for launching. In the years leading up to the Summer Olympics, the founders, John GL Barclay and Christine Martin, worked together with the city council and other local specialized businesses to help advise and provide housing and settling-in services to the different delegates and committees coming into Barcelona. Our company logo is, in fact, inspired by the Olympic rings symbolizing the 5 continents and the unity of people.
To us, this iconic sports event was the beginning of our now 28 year history and to Barcelona, it propelled a significant leap forward in city development. During the launching of the 25th Anniversary celebrations held March 2017, the city mayor, Ada Colau said the Barcelona 1992 Summer Olympics had left an indelible legacy of which the city could be proud: “Barcelona opened up to the world and, above all, to its citizens, becoming a collective project that looked both inwards and outwards.”
With billions of dollars for infrastructure investments, the celebration of the sports venue undoubtedly had an enormous impact on the urban culture and outward projection of Barcelona. One of the most important urban developments was opening the city to the sea with the construction of the Olympic Village and Olympic Port in the Poblenou district. The creation of modern sports facilities in the Olympic zones of Montjuïc, Diagonal, and Vall d’Hebron set the base for the city to be able to attract and host future events, sporting or otherwise. Many Hotels were refurbished and new ones were built to meet the needs of the influx of contemplated visitors. Finally, the construction of ring roads around the city helped to reduce traffic density, and the now Josep Taradelles – El Prat international airport was modernized and expanded with the opening of two new terminals.
More frequent news about the 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympic Games, brings about reminiscing in the locals who look back to 1992 with a sense of pride. It’s exciting to think we will again get to enjoy following the legendary sports event in just a few months!
This unique venue which embodies their motto: CITIUS – ALTIUS – FORTIUS or faster, higher, stronger, through the display of exemplary sportsmanship by the world’s top performing athletes is always a big inspiration for people all around the world and holds a very special place in the heart of our company.
